| Another fabulous paint job by
Neil and all I have to do
now is plumb the tank in and fit all the electrics. Many thanks to Tim Stevens of Beer Divers in Beer, Devon. He made some modifications to my new tank yesterday whilst I repaired his computers. |

| I now have
a Spot
GPS Messenger so I can now be found whilst on my adventure. I've put a link
at the top saying "Where am I?". If you click on the link it will open a new
page and you will be able to see where I am everyday during my
travels. Please note that today (14th March) was a practice run and I set the unit to track me every 10 minutes. I will not have it on much during the coming weeks but it will be activated at least once per day on my journey. It does not log the same way as a Garmin GPS unit. It only reports the Lat/Long of where I am at the moment I tell it to track me. If I set it to do it automatically every 10 minutes then you get a rough track log where the individual locations are joined together by straight lines. |

| The tank is having a couple of modifications, at Welbro's, to it's mounting points to make it more secure and should be ready tomorrow sometime. The box for the extra battery and electrics has been fabricated (not saying where as I believe I was grossly overcharged) and is being finished so it can be sprayed up to match the bike. | ||||||||

| Richard, my son, and his family, are down for the week and I took Rich for a spin around the lanes. We then went to the Station and he had a sidecar driving lesson before driving me back home. I'm still alive - result! | ||||||||

| The new
fuel tank made by shop4tanks arrived this morning and it is absolutely
fabulous. The welding is superb and they even pressure tested it to make sure
there were no leaks. The tank is temporarily mounted on the bike awaiting the
rest of the bits to make it a permanent fit. The tank is made from 316 s/steel
which is 2mm thick negating the need for a skid plate
underneath. Pictures soon. |

| I managed
to get a couple of pieces of 50mm x 50mm x 2000mm box aluminium (from
Welbro
Engineering), 3 x 150mm hook bolts and 3 x 8mm wing nuts and I made myself
a tracking tool for the outfit. I then did it all wrong but got there in the end! The order of work is... 1 - get the subframe of the sidecar level first - it was too low near the bike. 2 - then adjust the tracking - it was 62mm toe-out and it is now 23mm toe-in 3 - then adjust the lean-out on the bike. I managed to do 2, 1, 2, and 3, thus doubling the amount of work required. I then road tested it to my son-in-law's and put it in his garage to check how level the sidecar chassis was and it was spot on. I used a short spirit level (500mm) and checked the floor of the garage and then the sidecar chassis to find they were identical. The bike seems to handle more crisply. Job's a good 'un! |

| The rocker
covers are back to black! I had them cleaned, blasted, etched and powder coated by S L Powder Coatings. Steve Leach is an interesting character as he is into flying planes and he went to great pains to explain the whole process of powder coating which I found extremely interesting. A superb job done very quickly. A+++++ For those that are interested the paint bonds to the alloy rocker cover and will not come off when being cleaned or from stone chips. It is very similar to the old stove enamelling. |

'11 The new Ural screen turned up last week and I managed to get the paint colour matched to the bike and had www.ntsr.co.uk to paint it. I got it back today and fitted it with Robin Hill's help (he's staying with us this weekend). |

Jan '11 Sorry it's been a long time but I suffered from the flu from 31st Dec '10 to 21st Jan '11! Updates to the bike are 1) The first service has been carried out successfully 2) The new rubber 7" headlight has been fitted to the custom bracket on the sidecar - see photos below 3) I have decided to fit a fuel tank UNDER the sidecar body. I'm getting quotes in now but it will give me a 55ltr tank with electric pump to fill the main tank. This will give me a theoretical range of over 600 miles! 4) I'm going to clean the black paint off of the rocker covers to make it look like a 'Parade' model. 5) I swapped the tyres for Mitas H02's so I can save the more expensive Heidenaus for the trip. The front panel (the one with Ural Cross stamped into it) kept breaking it's rivets so I've bent the top and bottom to 45 degs to stiffen it up and fitted it with nuts and bolts. I took Brenda out for a 20 mile ride today and apart from cold fingers she seemed to enjoy it. She said she would need better gloves next time. |

||||||||
| I still need to get the convoluted flexible conduit to run the wires in so the headlight is 'permanently wired in with soldered joints. I will replace the soldered connections with waterproof connections when I get the conduit. | ||||||||

December 2010 So I bought a Ural sidecar outfit and then it snowed. I have never had so much fun on a bike. More snow please! |

| Babs - short for Babushka
- carried me home in comfort and without undue fuss. As usual David at F2
Motorcycles Ltd did a fantastic PDI and the bike was running beautifully when I
picked it up this morning. It is a great relief to know that David cares for
these machines as if they were his own. The ride home was without serious incident other than the sun shining head on as I approached Sparkford making it very difficult to see through my smeary visor. I think the Councils 'oop North' must put the salt on the roads with the same volume as used by someone rendering a house! |

| I couldn't put her away grubby so a quick wash and 30 mins spent sorting my garage out (that'll be "pile it all up the other end then!") saw Babs neatly tucked up for the night. Tomorrow she'll be washed properly and recoated with ACF50. | ||||||||
![]() Told you she'd fit in OK! |
||||||||
| Due to expected ghastly weather coming into the SW on Thursday and Friday (16th/17th Dec) I'm off to pick the bike up tomorrow (15th). I should get it home tomorrow night if the weather and my luck holds! | ||||||||
